Exploring Hanoi, Uncovering Stories
Greetings, dear Langports Foundation community! I write to you with a heart brimming with emotions, fresh from an unforgettable journey to Vietnam. As the Chairperson of The Langports Foundation, I had the privilege of embarking on a mission of hope alongside my family, Luke and Penny. Our destination? Hanoi - the vibrant, bustling heart of this beautiful country.
Reconnecting with SAYL Scholarship Alumni
Our adventure began with a casual beer session, catching up with three remarkable individuals - our SAYL Scholarship Alumni. These youngsters had once graced our halls at Langports, and now, years later, they shared glimpses of their lives in Hanoi. Their stories resonated deeply, reminding us of the transformative power of education and compassion.
Meeting Trong: A Journey to discover the street life
The next morning, we sat down to a steaming bowl of Pho, Vietnam’s iconic noodle soup, alongside Trong. His face radiated warmth - the very first recipient of a Langports scholarship, now a dedicated social worker at the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation. Together, we explored the bustling Long Bien markets and the surrounding slums - the very roots from which many Blue Dragon kids emerge.
Remarkable Young Adults: 24/25 SAYL Scholarship
Our hearts swelled with pride as Skye, Phuong, and I interviewed the 24/25 SAYL Scholarship Applicants. These two young men, resilient and passionate, left us in awe (and I cried more than once!). Their dreams, aspirations, and unwavering determination painted a vivid picture of hope for the future. What a privilege it was to not only interview them, but to offer TWO scholarships this year and change the lives of two incredible young men.
Playful Moments with Blue Dragon Children
The Blue Dragon children welcomed us with open arms. Their laughter echoed through the narrow alleys as we played games, shared stories, and connected heart-to-heart. These moments, simple yet profound, reminded us of the universal language of joy and resilience.
Guided by Trong: A Night on the Streets
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Trong led us back to the streets. Our mission? To connect with street kids, ensuring their well-being. Along the way, fate intervened, and we crossed paths with Michael Brosowski - one of the founders of Blue Dragon. Together, we sipped refreshing lemonades, exchanging tales of courage and compassion.
Into the Night: Outreach to Vulnerable Youth
Anna and Penny returned home, their hearts heavy with the weight of the day. But Trong and Luke - fueled by determination -hopped on their motorbike, venturing out into the night. Their tireless efforts reached vulnerable youth, offering a glimmer of hope in the darkness.
Workshops, Insights, and Valuable Connections
Our journey extended beyond the streets. We delved into workshops and information sessions, addressing the pressing issue of human trafficking in Vietnam. Blue Dragon’s tireless work in prevention and rescue left an indelible mark on our hearts. And then, a meeting with the communications team - a chance to share insights, strategies, and valuable information about fundraising and communication. Our partnership strengthened, fueled by a shared purpose.
The SAYL Family Dinner: Bonds and Inspiration
Amidst our whirlwind of experiences, Friday night brought forth a heartwarming gathering - the SAYL Family Dinner. Anna, Luke, and Penelope joined six alumni and two future scholars at a traditional Vietnamese restaurant. The room buzzed with excitement as stories of their time in Australia and lives back in Vietnam flowed freely. Alumni shared their experiences of Live, Love, Learn in Australia. The future scholars listened, their eyes wide with wonder. I hope we can continue this tradition each year brining everyone together. It was a magical evening - an exchange of dreams, laughter, and shared purpose.
Blue Dragon’s Incredible Work
Blue Dragon’s impact is immeasurable. Their unwavering commitment to vulnerable children and young adults across Vietnam is nothing short of incredible. As partners, we stand proud, honored, and humbled. Together, we weave a tapestry of hope, one life at a time.
In the Words of Trong: “We Are Family”
Trong’s parting words echo in my mind: “We are family.” Indeed, we are a global family bound by compassion, resilience, and the belief that every child deserves a chance. Let us continue this journey of hope, hand in hand, across oceans and borders.
With gratitude, Anna Chairperson, The Langports Foundation 🙌🌟
